Student difficulties concerning linear functions and linear models

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the difficulties newly enrolled students face when learning the topics of linear functions and linear models, as were observed during the 3-month Basic Math Course that implemented in August 2017. As such, the thesis investigates how linear functions and linear models are taught in two secondary schools. We use the theoretical framework known as The Theory of Didactical Situations when analyzing selected episodes concerning students’ engagement with the topics at hand. These are compared to the principal obstacles found in the existing literature on student difficulties with linear functions and linear models.
