From mathematics to science communication

Talk on science communication by Ionica Smeets

Ionica Smeets (1979) accidentally became a spoke person for mathematics in The Netherlands during her PhD in number theory. The blog 'math girls’ she started with colleague Jeanine Daems won many awards and Smeets started presenting tv-shows and writing columns for national papers and magazines. She wrote three non-fiction bestsellers on mathematics, science stories and parenting myths. In 2014 she published a handbook on science communication. After a few years as a science journalist she returned to the university as a professor of science communication where she currently studies how to bridge the gap between experts and laymen. In this talk she will discuss practical experiences and theoretical background of communicating science effectively.
