Perspectives from across the Atlantic: Science education in Ontario, Canada

Presentation by Dr. Xavier Fazio, Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Education at Brock University in Ontario, Canada.

Abstract:

Given the unique status of education in Canada, with no federal department of education, individual provinces and territories are fully responsible for all K-12 educational matters. The province of Ontario, Canada is the most populous jurisdiction in Canada with a highly diverse population. Given its unique context and relatively successful educational outcomes (from PISA, TIMSS), there has been international interest in Ontario’s educational system. While topics of interest have included literacy and numeracy, less emphasis has been placed on science education in Ontario. This presentation will provide perspectives on science education, illustrating that efforts (including international collaborations) are required to ensure a quality science education for all students.

Dr. Xavier Fazio is a Professor in the Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Education at Brock University in Ontario, Canada. His research interests are diverse and include science education, environmental education, teacher education and development, classroom and large-scale assessment practices for science education, and disciplinary literacy. Dr. Fazio teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in secondary science education, cognition and learning, and environmental sustainability education. He currently is working on a new Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada funded project exploring school science and local communities.
