In this paper I seek to answer the question:
Can students be helped in their understanding of science, by writing about science in another school discipline?
Answering this question cannot be done without first examining what we mean by understanding science, and the difficulties of learning science that are implied in the question. That in turn leads to asking how we learn and what is meant by learning. The learning theory standpoint, that is taken, is presented, and then a brief overview of learning difficulties in science is given, with these four areas considered as main areas causing learning difficulties:
1) The nature of ideas and knowledge that students already hold
2) The complexity of learning tasks compared to the information capacity of the student
3) Communication in a very broad sense
4) Students learning styles
