Validation in Mathematical Modelling: Aspects and Roles from an ATD Perspective
Speaker:
Elsa Puchaczewski, NTNU
Abstract:
Validation is recognised as a fundamental component of mathematical modelling across several scientific and teaching frameworks. Examples include the modelling cycle that appears in Blum and Leiss (2007) (see also Czocher, 2018), the modelling process from Blomhøj and Højgaard Jensen (2003) and descriptions of modelling in textbooks for undergraduate students (Velten, 2009).
This presentation will report on ongoing research on the aspects and roles taken by validation within the ATD perspective. The goal is both to articulate this notion using the conceptual tools —in particular, dialectics of enquiry— provided by the ATD framework and to identify specificities of validation in the context of mathematical modelling.
