Data Science in modelling education in upper secondary school
The PhD project is part of the research project DASME – Data Science in Mathematics Education. The overall aim of DASME is to investigate whether and how data science should be implemented as part of upper secondary mathematics education in Denmark, with the broader goal of developing curriculum and the teaching and learning of mathematics to further students critical citizenship, nurturing their ability to reflect about the data driven world we live in.
Based on the Antropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD) the intial phase of the PhD project will focus on identifying and mapping praxeologies related to data science that may be teachable and link to current content in upper secondary mathematics education. To investigate how students can acquire these praxeologies, teaching designed as Study and Research Paths (SRP) will be developed, implemented and analysed through short sequences of lessons. A particular focus here will focus on the media-milieu dialectics.
In a later phase, the project will focus on teacher professional development to ensure sustainability of the findings being anchored in practice and further examine the conditions and constraints of implementing data science as a part of upper secondary mathematics in Denmark.
