GenAI and scholarly knowledge in mathematics

Abstract

This seminar is a bit unusual, as it is not adressing a specific issue or case study in didactics of mathematics. On the contrary we are taking a sneak peak into the rapid transformation recent events might have had on schoalrly knowledge in mathematics. 

Based on a commentary in the Danish newspaper Information “Crisis meeting in mathematics”, we  invite the author Frederik Ravn Klausen, Post doc in mathematical physics, Cambridge University, to share knowledge about the use of GenAI in research in mathematics and associated domains. But also map out different oppinions and doubts GenAI creates for particularly young researchers: is it cheating if we use it, or are we cheating ourselves if we take a conservative and restricted approach to GenAI? The talk will take into account the rapidly changing situation.

After the presentation, we will discuss implications for the future of teaching universtity students – potential future researchers – and future teachers. If the nature of how we do mathematics and reason in mathematics changes, how does or should it change mathematics in other parts of the educational system?
