This entry gives a brief overview of the main aspects of the “publish or perish” doctrine. First, it describes the role that publications play as one factor among others in academic careers, and how early work in sociology of science vindicated this strong emphasis on publications in the academic reward system. Next, it reviews how scholars' research achievements are assessed today with special focus on the most popular bibliometric indicators. Finally, it discusses the main adverse effects of current assessment practices.
