The Practice of Supervision: Guiding thesis and project work across Bachelor’s and Master’s Levels

Learning outcome

This course focuses on the practice of supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s students undertaking theses or otherprojects. Through the course, participants will develop their ability to:

  • Examine, articulate, and develop their supervision practice
  • Identify and reflect on institutional frameworks, rules, and norms in relation to their own roles and responsibilities as supervisors
  • Provide feedback on students’ work in ways that support both their learning process and their final product.


The course runs over two days, with participants doing small investigations before sessions. To pass the course, participants are required to complete this preparatory work and actively participate in both course days.

Day 1: Rules, regulations and roles

  • Rules and regulations in your institution
  • Roles and responsibilities of the supervisor
  • Navigating difficult situations in supervision

Day 2: Supervision in practice

The second day focuses on supervision techniques and covers:

  • The supervisor letter
  • The practice of questioning in supervision
  • Feedback

 

 

Sessions combine discussions, exercises and short presentations, grounded in participants’ own practice, concerns and contexts. The course depends on the active engagement contributions of all participants.

As pre-work for the first course day, the participants are required to:

  1. Read the suggested literature
  2. Share course expectations and experiences of supervision
  3. Identify formal and informal rules and norms governing supervision in their institution


Between the two course days and as pre-work for the second day, the participants are to:

  1. Read the suggested literature
  2. Explore students’ experiences and expectations of supervision
  3. Draft a supervisor letter
