Abstract

This thesis explores how students learn the concepts of neutron scattering through simulation exercises prior to real experiments at the large scale neutron scattering facility, Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), in Switzerland.
Through a combination of social and linguistic network analysis, groups of students doing simulation exercises were analyzed to find the salient features of the two different learning situations. Moreover, network analysis was used to examine the transfer of competency and academic tools from the simulation to the real experiment. In both situations, the tendency to ask questions about the concepts was found as an important learning strategy.
Learning neutron scattering include a development in mathematic skills, computational skills, programming skills, modeling skills, and experimental skills. These skills are all included in the physics competency. The network graphs of the different student working groups entail the different dynamics and characteristics of each group. Four groups out of five show visual attributes that meet the characteristics of a community of practice.
The concept of the spatial instrument turned out to be important in the students' dialogue while doing simulation exercises. In the experiment situation at PSI the importance of the spatial instrument was receded, whereas the concept of the spatial sample, and the physics under investigation in the crystal were emphasized in their communication.
In this research, network analysis showed to be an advantageous method when used to describe and analyze the structures of the student working groups in learning situations. Especially, network analysis combined with the theory of communities of practice showed to be an intuitive and effective combination.
